The World's Best Apple Fritter Waffles

The World's Best Apple Fritter Waffles

These apple fritter waffles are TDF. Give ‘em a try for breakfast, snack, whatev. Here are my tips to ensure these waffles come out amazing:

  1. Use a cast iron skillet if you have one. The heat is so even and the apples get a delicious caramel taste.

  2. Cook the apples until they’re soft but not super mushy. You still want ‘em to have some bite.

  3. All waffle irons are different size-wise. Fill your waffle iron so you get a hearty waffle.

  4. Fold in the apples gently so they don’t break apart.

  5. Cook your apple fritter waffles until your waffle maker indicates they’re done (this is different for all waffle makers).

Apple Filling:
1 medium sweet apple, peeled and chopped
1 tbsp unsalted butter
1 tbsp brown sugar
1/2 tsp cinnamon
1/2 tsp vanilla extract

Waffle Mix:
2 c AP flour
1/2 tsp salt
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp cinnamon
1/3 c brown sugar
2 c buttermilk
1 tbsp vanilla extract

Vanilla Glaze:
1 c powdered sugar
2 tsp milk
1 tsp vanilla extract

Plug in waffle iron and begin to preheat.   Spray with nonstick spray before adding apple fritter waffle mix to waffle iron.

Make apple filling:
Melt butter in a skillet over medium heat.  Add apples.  Cook until soft, roughly 5 minutes.

Add brown sugar, cinnamon, and vanilla.  Cook 1-2 minutes more.

Remove from heat and set aside.

Make waffle mix:
Next, in a large bowl mix flour, salt, baking powder, cinnamon, and brown sugar.

Add buttermilk and vanilla.  Stir until well combined.

Fold in apple mixture gently.  Set aside.

Make vanilla glaze:
In a small bowl, add powdered sugar.  Stir in milk and vanilla extract until desired consistency.  Add more milk or vanilla to create preferred glaze consistency.  Set aside.

Make waffles:
Add 1/3 to 1/2 c (depending on the size of your waffle iron) waffle mix to waffle iron sprayed with nonstick spray.  Cook until your iron indicates your waffle is done, roughly 3-5 minutes.  Edges will be golden brown and crispy.

Serve covered with glaze.
